In the early 1980s a communist revolutionary organization called Sendero Luminoso – the Shining Path – began a brutal terrorism operation in the rural Andes region of Peru. The Shining Path used terror ruthlessly. The army sent to fight the terrorist group also used excessive force, destroying villages and killing many innocent civilians. In 2003, at the end of the 20-year insurgency, over 70,000 people died or disappeared. The resulting trauma, still today, profoundly affects the daily life of the Peruvian people. Bringing care and solace to these remote areas is the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Jesus Word and Victim. This is their story – bringing faith to those on the margins.
