Nicaragua – “Lord, Grant Us Peace”

“We priests were present, and we had to get in between both sides, in the middle of the rain of bullets; the truth is that I never imagined that I would be in the middle of such a complicated situation …

However, we did so with the desire to accompany our people” Fr. Julio Antonio Magnali In Nicaragua, on April 18, 2018, President Daniel Ortega introduced pension reforms that were rejected by the majority of the population. Demonstrations against the reforms were violently crushed by pro-government special forces. The outrage caused more protests which in turn triggered further repression and the situation escalated into a pitched battle. Hundreds have been killed and thousands injured. The Church, in healing the wounded, in protecting dissenters seeking sanctuary from pro-government mobs, in working towards mediation, herself has become a target. The film, through the eyes of Catholic leadership and youth, tells the story of the ongoing political repression, the efforts of the Church to bring peace, and the suffering of the faithful.
